Why Your Leviton Motion Sensor Switch Still Acts Dumb — And What Your Installer Isn't Telling You

Let me tell you about the first time I saw a Leviton motion sensor switch fail in a commercial install. Not because it was broken. Not because the wiring was wrong. But because the guy who installed it didn't read past page 2 of the manual. The Hidden Layer: Timeout Confusion and Default Settings

Here's what installers don't always tell you: when you power up a Leviton motion sensor switch for the first time, it defaults to a specific timeout setting. Usually the shortest one. That's by design — it's supposed to be configured on-site based on the space. But in practice, someone slaps it in, flips the breaker, and calls it done.

That hallway I mentioned earlier? The factory default timeout for that model was 30 seconds in test mode. The installer didn't change it. For three weeks, the lights turned off while people were still walking. The tenant complained. The contractor blamed the sensor. We tested it — sensor was fine. The timeout just hadn't been adjusted past the default.

What Happens When You Miss These Details

  • Trust erosion. When the lights keep misbehaving, people stop trusting the system. They start leaving lights on manual override. Now you've lost the energy savings you paid for.

The Installer's Blind Spot: What They Don't Tell Customers

I've worked with electrical contractors for years. Most of them are good at their job. But when it comes to smart switches — especially motion sensors with adjustable parameters — there's a pattern:

  1. They assume the defaults are fine for most spaces.
  2. They don't run the full detection test before leaving.
  3. They skip the step where they explain to the end user how the sensor works (or doesn't work for stationary occupancy).

Why? Because it takes time. And time is money on a job site. A quick install might take 20 minutes. A careful one with configuration and walk-test takes 45.

So when you ask an installer "can you change a light switch with the power on," the answer is technically yes — but they shouldn't. What's Actually Needed Here

Better specifications. That's the short version.

I'm not saying every motion sensor install needs a five-page commissioning document. But I am saying that if you're a facility manager or a building owner, you should ask the installer three questions before they leave:

  • What timeout did you set, and why?
  • Does the sensor cover the occupied zone completely?
  • Have you walked the full detection range to confirm it triggers?

The vendor who answers those questions clearly — even if their upfront install price looks higher — is almost always cheaper in the long run. Why? Because they don't charge you for a second visit to fix a default setting.

I've learned to ask "what's NOT included" before "what's the price." The install quote might be $180. The re-visit because the timeout was wrong? Another $150. Suddenly the $220 quote that included configuration and a walk-test was the better deal.

So glad I figured that out before our big Q3 project. Almost went with the lowest bid, which would have meant 60 sensors installed with factory defaults. The sheer volume of complaints… dodged a bullet.

If you're specifying motion sensors for a project — Leviton or otherwise — don't trust the defaults. Configure them for the space. Test them. And if an installer tells you it's fine without showing you the timeout setting?

Get a second opinion. Or at least request the specification up front.
