If you're about to install LED track lighting, you probably don't want a lecture on lighting design. You want a checklist. I'm a procurement manager, not an electrician, but I've managed lighting installs for offices, showrooms, and a few retail clients. Here's the checklist I wish someone gave me before the first job.

This is for 120V track lighting in residential or light commercial spaces. If you're dealing with 277V commercial systems, stop and call a licensed electrician. This guide also assumes LED track heads, not fluorescent or halogen.
Buying track lighting isn't just about the lights. You need to decide about dimming, smart control, and connectors before you place an order. So this checklist covers the parts, the install steps, and the procurement mistakes that have cost me money.
Step 1: Measure the Run and the Wattage
Before buying anything, measure the exact distance you want to cover. I usually add 10% for corners and mistakes. Then calculate maximum wattage.
Check the track system's max wattage rating. One red flag I keep running into: choosing sleek, bright LED heads and then realizing the track can only handle 100W per 8-foot section. We didn't have a formal compatibility checklist once, and it cost us a reorder when we ordered 100W heads for a 75W max track. Seriously, check this before anything else.

Step 2: Buy the Track and Make Sure Connectors Match
Track lighting is modular, but only if you stay within the same manufacturer's system. One vendor quoted me $1.80 per foot. Another quoted $1.35 per foot. Step 3: Pick the Right Dimmer (and Don't Assume Compatibility)
This is where "LED compatible" gets confusing. Not every dimmer works with every LED driver. In my experience, a Leviton dimmer wifi model — like the Decora Smart Wi-Fi dimmer — works well for LED track heads when you check the compatibility list first. The list is online, and it's the only way to avoid flicker.
I had a communication failure years ago. I told our electrician, "we need dimmers for LED track heads." He heard, "all the track heads are dimmable." End result: two heads were not dimmable. We had to swap them out. So the checklist says: verify that both the driver and the track head are forward-phase dimmable.
"If a track head isn't marked 'dimmable' with the driver spec, don't assume it is. The cost of returning is always more than checking."
If you want to control the track lights from your phone, Leviton's Wi-Fi dimmer is a no-brainer. It handles 120V and works with LED when you use the app to set the minimum dim level.

Step 4: Install the Track in the Right Order
Here's the actual install sequence. It's simple, but the order matters.
- Kill the power at the breaker. (I know someone who skipped it.)
- Mount the track to the junction box. Screw the mounting plate first, then connect the wires with wire nuts. Do not reverse these — I've seen track that wouldn't line up because the plate was on wrong.
- Snap the track pieces together before you connect incoming power. Make sure the connectors click. Loose connectors cause flicker.
- Feed the wires through and secure the track with the provided clips, not random screws.
- Insert the LED track heads, twist to lock, and turn the power back on.
Wire connections should follow the National Electrical Code — NEC 2023 is current for most US jurisdictions as of this writing.

Step 5: Set Up Smart Control (Wi-Fi and Zigbee Options)
If you're using a Leviton Wi-Fi dimmer, you're halfway there. But if you want to connect track lighting to a wider smart home system, you'll likely need a Zigbee gateway. A gateway Zigbee setup sounds complicated, but it's really about matching the right connectors.
A Zigbee connector joins the low-voltage control wire from the track receiver to the gateway. The Zigbee Alliance (now part of the Connectivity Standards Alliance) maintains the Zigbee 3.0 certification, so check for that logo before you buy. Not all Zigbee devices work with every gateway. (Ugh, I know.)
Here's the part I always forget: a Zigbee gateway works better over a wired network connection than over Wi-Fi. That's where a Leviton RJ45 connector comes in. Use a Cat6 connector to terminate the Ethernet cable near the gateway. It's a small cost that saves a lot of "I can't connect" support calls.
Pairing sequence: power the gateway, put the dimmer in pairing mode, then use the app to add the device. The Zigbee pairing process varies by hub, but the principle is the same. If you buy a Zigbee connector, buy the one specified by your gateway's compatibility chart.
Checkpoint: gateway is on stable Ethernet, Zigbee device pairs successfully, and the app controls the track lights.
Step 6: Test Everything Before You Clean Up
Don't climb down and celebrate until you've tested:
- Every track head turns on.
- The dimmer slides smoothly from 0% to 100% with no flicker.
- The app responds within a second or two.
- Each switch controls the right zone.
We once skipped this and had to call the electrician back for a loose neutral. That cost more than the original install. So this step is not optional. (Unfortunately.)
Common Mistakes That Show Up Later
- Buying a Wi-Fi dimmer without checking minimum wattage. Some LED track heads draw so little power that the dimmer thinks the bulb is out. The Leviton app has a minimum load setting, but you need to know it exists.
- Using the wrong connector between track sections. If the track brand uses "2-wire" and you bought "3-wire" for a single circuit, it won't work. Same width, different internals.
- Assuming Zigbee is Zigbee. A Zigbee connector from one brand might work, but the safest path is to check the gateway's supported device list.
- Skipping the end cap. If you buy a run exactly to the inch, you'll need an end cap. Cheap, but not included in some track kits.
When This Checklist Isn't Enough
This works for about 80% of standard LED track lighting installs. If you're dealing with 277V commercial power, high-bay track with emergency battery backup, or a custom canopy system, you need a licensed electrician. I recommend this checklist for residential and light commercial. For anything else, hire someone who carries liability insurance.
