Leviton Smart Lighting FAQ: Motion Sensor Lights, Zigbee Floodlights, and Hue Compatibility

1. What Leviton motion sensor light should I choose: occupancy or vacancy?

An occupancy sensor turns the light on automatically when it detects motion and turns it off after a no-motion delay. A vacancy sensor is manual-on: you press the switch, and the sensor takes care of turning it off when the space is empty. They aren't interchangeable for every code requirement. According to California's Title 24, many commercial spaces must use vacancy sensors rather than occupancy sensors (Source: California Energy Commission, 2025). ASHRAE 90.1 also allows occupancy/vacancy sensing as an automatic shutoff path, but details depend on space type.

Mounting matters. Most Leviton PIR sensors are designed to mount 4-6 ft above the floor, per Leviton installation instructions. In our Q1 2024 audit, the biggest cause of returned motion sensors wasn't the sensor logic—it was mounting height. Never expected so many field failures to come from install height, but that's what the audit showed.

2. Should I choose a Leviton motion sensor switch or a smart light switch?

It depends on the problem you're solving. A motion sensor switch is for rooms where lights get left on—supply rooms, bathrooms, offices. It works without an app, network, or hub. A smart switch (meaning scheduled, remote, or voice-controlled lighting) gives more flexibility. If the goal is "lights off when nobody is there," a sensor is the simpler, more reliable answer. If the goal is "turn lights on from my phone or schedule them," a smart switch is the right tool. Some Leviton smart switches include motion sensing, but don't assume it—check the model code and data sheet.

Looking back, I'd make the distinction even more obvious in our product selector: "smart" is about remote control and automation; "sensor" is about occupancy. They overlap, but they aren't the same thing.

3. Does Leviton smart lighting require a hub?

Not always. Leviton's Wi-Fi Decora Smart line works with the My Leviton app and connects directly to your router, so no hub is required for basic controls. The Zigbee and Z-Wave products are different: they need a compatible Zigbee coordinator or Z-Wave controller. A hub isn't necessarily a bad thing—it can make local control and cross-brand integrations more stable. But the decision should come before you buy, not after.

As of January 2025, the no-hub path is Wi-Fi; the protocol path is Zigbee or Z-Wave. Check the product box before you quote a job. The protocol is not hidden, but it's easy to miss when you're focused on wattage and load rating.

4. Is Leviton Zigbee compatible with Philips Hue (the Hue Zigbee system)?

Short answer: sometimes, but don't buy on hope. Hue bulbs use Zigbee Light Link, and the Hue bridge acts as the Zigbee coordinator. Leviton's current Zigbee devices are designed to Zigbee 3.0 (the standard maintained by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, csa-iot.org, January 2025). Zigbee 3.0 is intended to be broadly backward compatible, but "broadly" is not "guaranteed." Whether a specific Leviton device appears in the Hue app depends on the clusters it supports and how the Hue bridge interprets them.

I'm not 100% sure of every model, and I don't trust a compatibility claim that isn't in writing. If a Leviton spec sheet doesn't say "Works with Philips Hue," treat it as untested. If you're building a Hue-centric system, use Hue-compatible controls for the bulbs and use a Leviton Zigbee switch for standard wired loads you need to control separately.

5. What is a Zigbee floodlight, and can Leviton control one?

"Zigbee floodlight" can mean two different products: a floodlight fixture with an integrated Zigbee radio, or a standard floodlight wired to a Zigbee switch/relay. On the Leviton side, I can talk about the control. If the floodlight is powered through an accessible switch box, and the switch is rated for the load, you can turn it into a scheduled or sensor-based floodlight with a Zigbee switch. For wet locations, use an outdoor-rated cover.

The spec I always check now is inrush current. LED floodlight drivers can pull more than their steady-state wattage at startup. In a field demo back in 2023, a 300W-rated switch failed to hold a 240W LED floodlight because the inrush current exceeded the switch rating. That cost us a redo. Check inrush rating on both the driver and the switch.

6. Flood light vs spotlight—which one should I use for outdoor security?

The simplest difference is beam spread. A floodlight throws a wide beam, usually 60-120 degrees, and is good for covering an open area like a yard, parking bay, or loading dock. A spotlight throws a narrow beam, typically 15-45 degrees, and is better for a sign, a tree, or a specific entry point. Two fixtures with the same LED wattage can have very different useful throw because the optics concentrate or spread the light.

I'm not the fixture photometry engineer—that's outside my corner. For actual fixture selection, look at beam angle and candela, not just lumens. For typical security coverage, I'd rather see one floodlight for the open area and one spotlight aimed at the entrance than two floodlights washing everything. But that's a control guy's practical view, not a lighting design rule.

7. Do Leviton smart lighting controls need a neutral wire?

Most Leviton smart switches and dimmers I review require a neutral in the wallbox. That includes Wi-Fi and Zigbee switch families. There are no-neutral options, but they come with different load limits and wiring requirements. If you're quoting a retrofit in an older building, neutral presence should be the first question. I've rejected product guides that didn't state the neutral requirement clearly enough—contractors hate surprises in the field.

Don't hold me to every model, because the number is growing, but the rule is: verify on the spec sheet before ordering. If no neutral is available, a no-neutral switch or a smart bulb approach can change the whole strategy, including load type, app, and compatibility. It's worth a 5-minute check before you estimate the job.
