What the Diagram Actually Shows

There are several valid 3-way layouts: power can enter at the first switch, at the second switch, or at the light fixture. Each one looks different when you open the box.

That's the first and most expensive misunderstanding. The diagram isn't lying. It just assumes a setup that might not match yours. No amount of staring will make it match.

Missing Neutral Is the First Thing I Check

Modern Leviton lighting controls—especially Leviton WiFi light switch models—need a neutral wire to power the radios. Motion sensor switches in 3-way setups may need it too. And in older buildings, the switch box may have only a hot wire, a switched wire, and a ground. No neutral. The diagram doesn't help when the wire isn't there.

The National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) has required a neutral at most lighting switch locations in new residential construction since roughly 2011. If your light fixture uses two low-wattage LED bulbs, the total load might be lower than the switch is designed to handle. The switch can't detect the load reliably, so it flickers or stays on. This is especially common in recessed lighting retrofits, because people swap in LED trim without thinking about the switch.

The fix isn't more wire. It's a switch that's rated for low LED loads, or one with an adjustable minimum load. Leviton publishes this in the spec sheet. Read it before you buy, not after the third trip to the supply house.

The 3-Way Part Is Where People Buy the Wrong Switch

There's a good chance you have a Leviton motion sensor switch that's designed for single-pole use only. A single-pole sensor can handle one switch controlling one light. In a 3-way setup, you have two switches controlling one light. You need a sensor that's rated for 3-way operation, or you need a companion switch kit. This isn't hidden. It's on the box. But when you're standing in the aisle, it's easy to grab the single-pole version without reading the fine print.

What I mean is: the diagram is a start, not a substitute for a voltage tester.

I recommend Leviton for 80% of our projects. But if you have an older wiring setup with no neutral and no plan to rewire, a Wi-Fi switch might not be right for you. Look for a switch rated for no-neutral use, or call an electrician. There's no shame in that. The shame is creating more work for the person after you. Usually that's someone like me.
