I review roughly 200 lighting control items a year as a quality and compliance manager for a controls distributor. In our Q1 2024 audit, we rejected 9% of first deliveries because the model number on the box did not match the project specification. Most of those problems were not electrical failures. They were mismatches: wrong switch topology, missing neutral, wrong trim size, or incompatible Zigbee device profiles.

This article is the checklist I use before I approve a Leviton motion sensor light job. It applies to contractors, facility managers, and system integrators. It is not a substitute for a licensed electrician. I am not a licensed electrician, and I will not pretend to know every local code amendment. What I can tell you is how to verify the basics before you spend labor on the wrong product.

There are six checks. Some are obvious. A few are the ones I see skipped almost every month.

Check 1: Confirm whether you actually need a 3-way sensor

Before you open a Leviton 3 way motion sensor switch wiring diagram, count the switches that control the light. If two switches control the same light from different locations, you need a 3-way motion sensor or a sensor that works with an accessory companion switch. If one switch controls the light, use a single-pole sensor. It is cheaper and easier to set up.

Check 2: Read the load rating on the switch, not the front of the box

A Leviton motion sensor light switch can look like a standard switch. The front of the retail package might say 600 W. The small print on the back or in the datasheet might say 500 W max LED. When a load runs over the rated value, the sensor's thermal protection can kick in early, and the light may turn off at random times.

Checkpoint: compare the stamped model number and max load on the product label with the project schedule. If the spec sheet says one model and the label says another, stop. That was one of the most common Q1 2024 rejection reasons.

Check 3: Verify neutral at every switch box

Most Leviton occupancy sensors and smart switches need a neutral wire. Since NEC 404.2(C), most new switch boxes in the U.S. need a grounded conductor at the box, but there are exceptions. Older boxes often have a white wire that is not a neutral; it can be a switched return or a traveler in a 3-way setup. You need to test, not guess.

This is where I have to stop. I am not a licensed electrician, and local code amendments can change the rule. If you see a switch box with only black and white, no ground, and no accessible neutral, that is a red flag. Get an electrician to verify before you go further.

Check 4: Read the Leviton 3 way motion sensor switch wiring diagram for your model

Let me be direct: there is no single Leviton 3 way motion sensor switch wiring diagram that covers every model. The drawing changes depending on whether the sensor is in the line-side box or the load-side box, and some models use a companion switch instead of a traditional remote switch.

Typical wiring for a Leviton 3-way motion sensor switch looks like this, based on the instruction sheets I review:

  • Green or bare copper: ground
  • White: neutral
  • Black: line or load, depending on the box
  • Red or blue: traveler between the sensor and the companion switch

If the wall box has two traveler wires from an old 3-way setup, one of the traveler wires may be unused or capped. Do not assume both connect. The wiring diagram tells you exactly which traveler is active for your model. (I should add: some Leviton models ship with a white pigtail for neutral. If you are using a model without the pigtail, the wiring will look different.)

Wait, I need to be more precise. The line-side and load-side configurations are not the same. If the sensor is installed in the box where power comes in, the black wire is line. If it is installed in the box that feeds the light, the black wire is load. The red traveler still connects to the companion switch. Most instruction sheets include separate drawings for each case.

If I remember correctly, current Leviton 3-way sensors use a red traveler in most residential series, but an older commercial series used blue. Don't quote me on the color; quote the drawing.

Check 5: Measure the recessed lighting opening before you order anything

This one seems too simple, but it gets skipped all the time. How do you measure recessed lighting ceiling? Remove the trim ring and measure the inside opening, not the outside of the trim ring. Put the tape measure across the widest part of the cutout opening in the ceiling. That number is the opening size you match to a trim or retrofit housing.

For a ceiling-mount occupancy sensor, the same logic applies. Measure the mounting ring or knockout on the fixture, not the overall sensor diameter. I once approved a purchase order for 20 Leviton ceiling sensors and mounting rings based on a product photo. The rings were too small for the fixture openings. The supplier charged freight both ways, and the client waited an extra week. The money I saved by not measuring was about zero compared to the delay.

Checkpoint: write the opening diameter in the project notes. If you can see a stamped label inside the recessed housing, that label has the exact size and model.

Check 6: Qualify Tuya Zigbee and zigbee outlet compatibility before you trust the app

Zigbee should be simple. In practice, Zigbee is a protocol, not a guarantee. Leviton Zigbee products use standard Zigbee 3.0, but that does not mean every Tuya Zigbee device will pair cleanly with every Zigbee controller or hub.

I saw this in May 2024. A Tuya Zigbee outlet paired with a Zigbee coordinator after two tries. Then the outlet stopped seeing commands after the coordinator went to sleep. The same coordinator had no problem with a different zigbee outlet. The difference was device profile support, not the Zigbee radio.

If you are adding a zigbee outlet, check these three things before you install it in a wall:

  • Does the outlet publish the same device endpoints that your coordinator expects?
  • Does the manufacturer state Zigbee 3.0 certification or only Zigbee HA?
  • Is the outlet a router or an end device? If it is a router, the network might behave differently than if it is an end device.

I am not saying Tuya Zigbee is bad. Some Tuya devices are solid and inexpensive. The correct statement is: not every Tuya Zigbee device is compatible with every Zigbee hub. Qualify it before you buy a whole dozen.

Common mistakes after the six checks

Once you have the right Leviton sensor, the right load rating, the right ceiling measurement, and the right Zigbee profile, the work is not done. The mistake that still costs us callbacks is closing the wall before testing every switch position.

Operate the companion switch, the sensor switch, and the app if there is one. Then operate them again from a different load state. A 3-way sensor that works in one position can act strangely when the remote switch changes the state. If you patch the drywall before testing, the service call will be bigger than it should be.

If the light flickers at the lowest dim setting, check whether the Leviton model has a low-end trim adjustment. That is a spec issue, not always a wiring issue.

We standardized a bench-test script in 2022. Our callback rate dropped by about a third. That is the efficiency worth aiming for: one careful test, not three service calls.

As of January 2025, Leviton's app and product line move fast. Model numbers on older stock can look identical but have different internal revisions. Verify the current instructions for your exact model, and if you are using a custom Zigbee network, check the Connectivity Standards Alliance certification database before you claim compatibility.

I should add one more thing: I am not a licensing authority. Treat this as a quality checklist, not legal or electrical advice. If a job feels wrong, stop and call someone who can put a license number on it. That is not inefficiency. It is the kind of efficiency that does not end with a $22,000 redo.
