Leviton Products: What to Use, When, and Why (A Scenario-Based Guide)

A regular lamp emits light in the wrong spectrum. Plants primarily need red and blue wavelengths for photosynthesis. Your typical white LED has a broad spectrum, but not enough of the specific red and blue that plants trigger on. Lux, which is how bright a light looks to you, is not the same as PAR, which is photosynthetically active radiation. So even a super bright lamp can be useless for growing.

On top of that, regular lamps can get hot, which burns leaves if they're too close. If you're in a true pinch—like a plant is suddenly dying and you need a temporary solution—a regular lamp might keep it alive for a day or two, but don't expect healthy growth.

What actually works:

  • Get a proper grow light or a full-spectrum LED lightstrip if you're serious about plants. Pair it with a timer or a smart plug to keep the photoperiod consistent.
  • If you're stuck with a regular lamp, use a cool-white or daylight LED bulb, place it a few inches away from the plant, and run it no more than 12–16 hours a day.
  • Counterintuitive bit: plants need darkness. Leaving the lamp on 24/7 can stress them out—more harm than good.

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

Here's my rule of thumb:

  • Deadline looming? You're in Scenario 1. Buy certainty—stick to verified products and expedited delivery.
  • Mixing smart brands? Scenario 2. Test compatibility before you commit, and be prepared to reset expectations.
  • Own a home or facility with pricey equipment? Scenario 3. Whole-home surge protection is your first line of defense.
